Have you ever called anyone a slut? Has anyone ever called YOU a slut? Do you feel that the Madonna/Whore Complex is all too alive and well? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, then you'll probably find something of interest within the pages of the first issue of Burn Book, the Slut issue!
Burn Book is a comics magazine. It was created between September 2009 and May 2010 as part of Athena Currier's senior project at Hampshire College. Athena produced four issues during that time. The magazine's title is a reference to Tina Fey's 2004 film, "Mean Girls," in which mean popular girls write insults about their classmates in a big pink notebook. In Athena's Burn Book, each issue is devoted to a different stereotype label: Slut, Hick, Hipster, and Geek. Athena explored, analyzed, and devoured these labels. She had moments of identification (as well as an utter lack of it) with all of them. To prepare for each issue, Athena read books, essays, and blogs, conducted interviews, called for submissions, and scoured her brain for stories of her own relating to each theme. Then, she made some comics, wrote some articles, and slapped the whole thing together. Athena had a lot of fun making Burn Book, and she hopes you'll have fun reading it.
